[edit] Brian Peppers (uncensored)
- Brian Peppers deleted by Jimbo Wales on February 22, 2006
- The history of the Brian Peppers article is unique and convoluted:
- Brian Peppers, who is also the subject of a Snopes investigation article, achieved status as a meme after his photograph on the eSORN database was discovered and massively propagated and discussed on-line.
- Evidence shows that anonymous editors began posting incoherent articles about this subject as early as May 2005, containing "nothing but a JPEG image from www.esorn.ag.state.oh.us, qualifying for speedy deletion." After several more of these types were posted and deleted (according to Wikipedia process and procedure), a neutrally-toned and well-written article was posted on December 17, 2005. The very next day, a Wikipedia administrator violated Wikipedia deletion policies by "speedy" deleting the article and then write-protecting the page in order to prevent recreation. Shortly thereafter, another administrator overturned the deletion, and brought the matter before the community to discuss its merits. The outcome was to not delete the article, with 66% of the community supporting its inclusion on Wikipedia. Approximately 6 weeks later, another rogue administrator deleted the article outside of process yet again, citing that he had done so "at the request of a family member of its subject." [1] This out-of-process deletion was overturned by another administrator, and then brought before the community for discussion for the sixth time. (detailed account of events) Again, the majority of the community voted to keep the article.
- Against the will of the people who voted twice to keep the most recent version of the Brian Peppers article, Jimbo Wales in an unprecedented move decided that none of that mattered and made the executive decision to censor the article in full, delete the history from public view, and place an arbitrary one year moratorium against its recreation.
